Our community youth boards are comprised of a group of 15-18 high school aged youth who are given the responsibility to award grant monies to organizations and programs serving at-risk youth in their communities. At the beginning of the grant year the board evaluates the current needs of at-risk youth in their communities and establishes an area of focus. The board then solicits grant requests from organizations that have programs serving the needs of at-risk youth. Board members carefully evaluate the grantees by reviewing their grant application paying close attention to their programs, their financials, their leadership and the impact their funding requests will have on their ongoing efforts. They work together as a board to make the final funding decisions.
While serving on a youth board you will learn: Robert's Rules of parliamentary procedure, to function as a member of a Board of Directors, how to evaluate the financial health of an organization, to understand budgets and financial statements, to develop team-building skills, to engage with civic leaders to understand community needs, to act as steward of a non-profit organization's fund, and to experience the joys of philanthropy. This is a rare opportunity for you to have experiences that many adults never have and will position you well to become a community and philanthropic leader of tomorrow. For many youth board members their involvement with Make The Dash Count has been life-changing. You will learn the power of your own generosity.
To be eligible to join a youth board you must be a high-school freshman, sophomore or junior and be prepared to commit to serving on the board until you graduate from high-school. Seniors are not eligible to join. Our founding youth board which served the Tacoma / Gig Harbor Washington area for 21 years has closed and is currenly not accepting new applications. The Foundation has identified the pressing needs of at-risk youth in the Southwest Florida area and is currently working with Naples community leaders to establish a new youth board chapter in Naples Florida .
